Editing Investigation

Hello again everyone!

For this blog post, I want to talk about a paper I wrote recently in my English classed that is called what the title of this post is called, “Editing Investigation”. Now, I don’t want to legit paste the entire paper here because lets be honest, it’ll take way to long to read, so no. But I am going to share some things of my editing investigation. What I was investigating was why editing was so hard. The conclusion that I made in that paper was we are not perfect, and by having others read what we wrote, value the feedback and try to use the feedback that was given, we can get a step closer to becoming perfect writers. Editing is such a pain though, because we don’t want others try to tell us what needs to be fixed and whatnot. But if you want to be good at writing, you have to learn to accept the feedback others give, and try and see if that feedback will work or not on your paper. You have the power to change it, because in the end of the day, it is your grade that gets affected, am I right?

Spelling Conventions

Hello again everyone!

For this weeks blog, I want to touch on the topic of spelling conventions. You may be asking yourself, “why spelling conventions? Why this topic?” Well, since I have touch on a little bit of something within the topics of English, I think it is time for spelling conventions. So let us begin!

There is a book that I have been reading in my English class in college called, “The Great Typo Hunt”, I talked about this book in my last blog post. Anyway, there was a part in the book where a lady gets upset at the people in the book because the people in the book were trying to correct a spelling error that they saw on a sign people were buying. The lady that was selling the signs got upset at the people in the book, and defended her signs by saying “free market”. Now, I’m not one to judge, but the lady took it the wrong way when the guys in the book were trying to help with the misspell on the signs. If you misspell something, it is only right to try and fix it, or am I crazy? By the way, in the book she was selling signs that read, “Bon Appetite”, which is wrong. Spelling convention people, GET IT RIGHT!

Three Great Books

Hello everyone! It has been awhile since I last wrote on the blog. I am sorry about that, and I do everything I can do be more consistent when blogging. Well in any case, let us begin!

For this weeks blog, I am going to talk about three great English books I have been reading throughout my college semester. This books are really good when it comes to anything that is English related.

The first book I want to talk about is a book called “The Great Typo Hunt” by Jeff Deck & Benjamin D. Herson. This book is funny and really good, because if you didn’t know already from reading the title, it is about typo hunts! This group goes around real world places in search of typos. Typos in stores, restaurants, etc. The intended purpose of this is to show how the world is not perfect in spelling, and no matter what, there are bound to be spelling errors everywhere you go. I would highly recommend this book for laughs and to see how imperfect the world is when it comes to spelling.

The second book is called ” A World Without Whom” by Emmy Favilla. This book is more on the personal opinions I would say when it comes to English related topics. The purpose about the book, in my opinion, how grammar is changing with as the internet is a big reason languages are changing because new words are always created by the internet. I recommend this book if you want to read something that is funny, because the author is really funny when she talks about topics, but if not I would skip this book.

Lastly, I want to talk about the book, ” The Workplace Writer’s Process” by Anne H. Janzer. This book is the one I haven’t read too much on, but it is good on how to write efficiently, consistently and overall professional. I recommend this book because it is really something to read on if you want to perfect writing in a more formal way.

Well there you go! These are the books I have been reading this semester of college. These three books are really neat and I would check them out if you can!

Pronoun Antecedent

Hello again amigos!

In today’s blog, I want to talk about Antecedents in writing, since this is something I struggled a little bit growing up and I wanted to help any who are having the same problem as well. So let us begin!

Antecedent is something that was mentioned previously. For example, a person or event.

To show what I am talking about, let me talk about an example. There was one time when I was in grade school when I was reading a paper that someone wanted me to proof-read for them. As I was reading I saw something that didn’t make sense with the writing. It went along the lines of, “The kid stood tall and delivered the speech to the classroom.” Instead of the world “the” before speech, my friend could’ve added “he” or “she” instead of “the”. The reason being is because “he” or “she” is the pronoun that refers back to the antecedent, which was the kid.

Another example is when I was in elementary school. I remember when I was writing a short paper for my 5th grade class and I was so into what I was writing. At the time, I was so into writing stories based on video games. Now, the common mistake I would do when I was writing, was I would talk about a character that is a male, but in my head I am thinking of other character that is female and I would write something like this, “Bob looks over the hill, sees the ocean full of ships. She then walks over to Bob and watches as well” See the mistake? Who is she? Now I could’ve added a sentence before that like, “Bob looks over the hill, sees the ocean full of ships. He then turns to look at Mary. She then walks over to Bob and watches as well.” Now that sounds a whole lot better right? The pronouns are “he” and “she” and Bob and Mary are the antecedent.

I hope with the two examples I gave helped understand what pronoun antecedents are! I speak from experience that this was no easy case when I was a kid.

Pronouns

Hello everyone! It has been awhile since I last wrote on this blog and I am sorry about that. For tonight’s post, I am going to talk about possessive pronouns. Now you may be asking yourself, “why should I care?” Well, the reason you should care is because if you know your possessive pronouns, you will not look like a fool when you write something! So let us begin.

The most common thing I see a lot of people getting wrong, is “it’s” and “its”. It still amazes me that till this day, people sometimes mix those up, which I find very funny. If you didn’t know already, “it’s” is shorten down from “it is”, and “its” is the belonging of something. For example, “My dog is very picky with its food.” If you were to use the other it’s, then that sentence would not make any sense at all. Sometimes when people are lazy, they will just type “its” when it was supposed to be “it’s” and that is fine if you are having a conversation with a friend or family. But if you were texting, for example, your boss. Then it is important to know the importance of the two words. Possessive pronouns are important because if you use it wrong, you will get a lot of confuse faces when someone reads what you wrote.

I hope that clears up any misinformation about the “it’s” and “its”. I hope you learn something from this, because it is honestly a life savor.

Email Revision

Good afternoon everyone! I am back at it again with the weekly posting for the blog. In today’s blog, I will be revising an email that I sent to a previous professor that I’ve had. The point of this, is because I was reading a book called A World Without Whom by Emmy Favilla and I read in chapter 11 about emails and how they are hard to come up and how sometimes emails may come off in a different way than what you would’ve hoped for. So after reading that chapter, I will try to edit this old email and see if I can use some of what was said in the chapter in the book. The picture that I am sharing to you guys on this blog is about how I messed up on an essay by turning in the wrong copy of the essay. This email took me about 3 minutes to make because I was in a state of panic because my grade dropped a lot when the wrong copy of the essay was graded. I started off friendly in the email I would say, greeting my professor with, “Hello Professor Naihe!” I then stated that I was one of her students and went straight into the point on why I was emailing her. Looking back on this email, when I wrote, “Here’s the problem” it looks like my old professor was the one that messed up and not me, at least that is how I see it. Sure I explain that I messed up and submitted the wrong copy, but that small sentence appeared that I was implying that it was her fault. I would add on to that small sentence by adding, “Here’s the problem, I messed up.” Something along those lines, rather than just saying “Here’s the problem.” I think I could’ve been more professional in this email, like I should’ve typed computer, instead of “pc.” Like I said, I wrote this email in 3 minutes because I saw what my grade was and I panicked. I ended the email with a thank you and added my name on the bottom of the email (like a pro). Other than that, the email doesn’t look too bad I would say, being under a state of shock after seeing an A go down to a C or D (I can’t remember how long it went). Thankfully, she was super ok with me resubmitting the essay, so the email didn’t come off rude, because if it did, I feel like she would’ve said “no”.

Troll

Hello again friends!

Today’s blog will a bit different from what I’ve previously posted. In this blog, I will talk about a word that devolved a different meaning because of internet exposure throughout the years. The purpose of this blog is to show that in time, words will have a different meaning in the internet. You can take a guess on what word I will be talking about for this blog.

I think it is safe to say that growing up, we used to think the word “troll” would mean a big, scary looking monster that lives in the forest somewhere. Thinking about a troll back then, meant a scary monster, but now it means something different, thanks to the wonderful power of the internet. The word “troll” now means a guy/girl that causes problems on the internet. I remember when I first got exposed to this word with its new meaning. I was playing a video game with a few buddies of mine, and this guy was being a real jackass, and decide to kill the fun in what my friends and I were doing. Then one of my friends called the guy a troll, and I thought it was funny because he called him a monster. But then I found out what it really meant when typed in the word “troll” on google. The definition of troll is as goes, “In internet slang, a troll is a person who starts quarrels or upsets people on the internet…”.

So there you have it, a word that changed because of the internet. There are many other words that have changed as well thanks to the internet, but if I were to name all of the words with their new meaning, I will be typing for a very long time. But that was one funny word that got a different meaning. Please don’t be a troll.

Late night session: Writing Styles

Good evening everyone!

For this post, I kind of want to put my brain onto the table for just a second, and talk about some of writing styles that took me awhile to understand. The reason why I am doing this is to see if I am the only one that is one this boat. I will list 5 styles of writing that I am a hard time understanding. So with that being said, let us begin!

If you don’t know what abbreviation means, then I will give you a small description. Abbreviation:shorting a word. That is my definition of the word anyways. I think it is save to say that in one point in time, we were so lazy to write a word that we just decided to shorted it down so that way it saves us some time. An example of this, is with the word “with.” Personally I don’t do this, but at one point of time, a friend of mine send me a text using “w/” instead of “with.” When I first saw that for the first time, I was left so confused on what in the world that was. In fairness, I was in 8th grade when that happened.

One style that I had troubles with grade school, and sometimes to this date, was either or not to capitalize or lowercase words in titles. In school, I was kind of a booger, and I never took writing seriously. But when I did took it seriously, I did not know if I should capitalize or lowercase all the words in a title, for example, a essay title. If the memory serves me right, I believe the times you capitalize words in titles, is the first and last word in the title, verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and I think that is all. (Hopefully the title on this post is good, I am not a master in writing apparently, fingers crossed.)

As a kid, serial commas were something that I hardly ever use. Serial Commas, if you didn’t know already, are used to separated wording in a sentence, and they can be lifesavers. For example, the sentence, “Let’s eat kids!” sounds flat out wrong right. But if you had a comma, “Let’s eat, kids!” it sounds a lot better! From K-8, commas were the least of my worries, as long as my friends understood what I was saying to them.

Whom, the word that I found to be so fancy when I used it in writing. Whom is another way of saying “who” and when I found that out, I thought to myself, “man, now I can sound like I am somewhat smart when I write something.” In all seriousness, the only time I have seen this word other than in school, are in books. Other than that, no one has texted me using that word instead of “who.” I never understood why people just don’t use “who.” In my head, when I see someone use it, I say to myself, “I think they are trying to be fancy,” cause I know the few times I have used that word, I felt so fancy that I wanted to pour myself a glass of wine cause I was so proud of myself.

Lastly, the different types of spelling variations there is in certain words. What I mean by that, is for example, “That is their dog.” There are a lot of words out there that have different variations, and with those different variations, come different meanings. In middle school, I would always use the word “there” instead of “their”, and completely forgot about “they’re.” (I know, I was not the brightest in middle school, cut me some slack. I am in college now I am improving).

Well there you go! My list of the five writing styles that took me awhile to understand! I hope some of the things I said are relatable in some ways.

Misspelled words in the Real World.

To start my blog, I want to show a picture of a sign that is in the real world that is using the wrong word. Instead of saying “we’re open”, the person who made this sign put the word “were” which is wrong. If you look up the definition of the word were, the definition also reads that it is also confused with the word, “we’re”. The reason why I am showing you guys this is because not everything is correct, and people do tend to make mistakes. By not correctly using the apostrophe, you can completely change the meaning of a word. So remember kids, stay in school.
